Subcutaneous fat deposits can enlarge the lower neck and back area between the shoulders, causing the formation of a fat pocket commonly called a buffalo hump. Also called a dorsocervical fat pad, this accumulation of fat not only affects one’s appearance but can also impair mobility and limit the neck’s range of motion; in extreme cases, patients may even experience difficulty walking.
Although they tend to develop due to reasons outside of our control, like genetics or medical conditions, having a buffalo hump can be embarrassing and potentially lead to back issues. Unfortunately, liposuction-based procedures that seem like viable buffalo hump treatments use manual methods that require large incisions to access subcutaneous fat.
Buffalo Hump AirSculpt® uses patented technology that removes excess neck fat with a delicate plucking motion. Everything is done through a tiny two-millimeter wide entry point, and in addition to fat removal, this treatment provides skin tightening too. Because AirSculpt® is minimally invasive, recovery is much quicker than with traditional liposuction. Most patients are back to their normal activities in 24 to 48 hours. After the procedure, there may be some minor swelling, which is normal. To address this, a compression garment is worn under clothing for about 14 days to ensure optimal results.
